"We have been thinking about building a high quality winery here in San Giuseppe Jato for years..."
This area is rich in water and suitable for agriculture, the land is fertile and has the right altitude, the exposure of the whole valley, which stretches to the south-west, is excellent, it is well ventilated and has a considerable temperature swing between day-time and night-time. Everything seemed to confirm our assumptions which became increasingly less absurd day by day. Besides wine growing has always existed here in San Giuseppe Jato and interesting concerns have been emerging, all of them aiming at high quality grapes production. Those long chats always ended with great expectations and each of us thought the following day was the right day to set up the company and start building the winery. We know well the territory of our city and we had already mapped the plots of land which were particularly suited to wine growing. We chose those plots that seemed to be the best ones in the area, starting from those located in Portella della Ginestra area where there is a Merlot vineyard at an altitude of 800 m. above the sea level, to those which are in Zabbia and Pietralunga areas, where Syrah and Catarratto are planted. We chose about 150 hectares on the whole: eighty of them were already vineyards with native varieties, such as Nero D’Avola and Catarratto, that had been planted using old and outdated systems/ but with old and outdated planting systems. We also chose the name for this gamble: Feotto dello Jato, from the place-name “feudotto” (little fief), was the name of those pieces of land located on the right bank of the Jato river which belonged to the former “Chiusa Fief” up to the middle of the 19th century. We thought it was its due to show our gratitude to this wonderful territory…” From “Journey among the great wines of Sicily” by Andrea Zanfi.
We were and we are still a good team. Gaetano Buffa, great connoisseur of the old art of the wine growing, he takes care of his vineyards with passion and commitment, from planting to harvesting, as well as Nicola Buffa, Giovanna and Giuseppe Vitale, Giuseppina Todaro and her son Daniele La Milia, experts and partners of the firm, together with the oenologist Nicola Colombo. The young Sicilian oenologist, serious and professional, keen on the art of vinification, and Calogero Todaro, freelance agronomist, unresting director of the winery’s daily activity, are the driving force behind the firm. |
